Once Upon A Lunch Break...Kike's Kitchen

Every Friday, my good friend/co-worker and I treat ourselves to lunch after a long work week. No more cold sandwiches, or leftovers from the night before. Our job takes us in and around the surrounding Athens, GA area, so we decided to try a new eatery every week while on break.

This week we decided to ride down Hwy 29. Just past the DMV, across from Ingles, tucked away in the corner of the Chevron Food Mart is Kike’s Kitchen. Kike’s Kitchen is an authentic Mexican restaurant. A fairly new business, Kike’s started in 2021 with humble beginnings from selling plates out of the house to now moving into their first location.

As I stated before the restaurant is located in a gas station, but by no means is it a factor in the taste and quality of the food. The salsa bar looks like it is kept fresh on a daily and the quality of the ingredients in my meal looked and tasted fresh.

I ordered a steak torta with a side of fries totaling around $14. When trying any new Mexican spot, I always start off with a torta; my reasoning is if you can’t get the torta right, then I question everything else. And oh boy, did they pass the test! My sandwich was nice and soft with a buttery crust, not too messy and with every bite, I was able to taste every ingredient. It was delicious!!! I am a ketchup with my fries kind of guy and not too much into fries sauce, but I could say that the house sauce that came with the fries was something that had me rethinking my stance.

I’ve struck gold in finding this new spot! As soon as I finish eating, I went immediately to their Instagram page and started making a list of everything I wanted to try next. I am a big Mexican food lover and after trying Kike’s Kitchen for the first time, I have now put this restaurant in my top 3 Mexican spots in Athens, GA.

Hours of operation: Closed on Mon. Open Tue/Wed 11am-8pm. Thurs 4 pm-9 pm. Fri/Sat 11am- 9pm. Sun 11 am-5pm. Located 4272 Old Danielsville Rd, Athens, GA 30601. I would highly recommend Kike’s Kitchen to any and everyone. I will definitely be back!!

Just How I Like It!!

‘‘ A burger is not a burger if you don’t need two hands and a lot of napkins”

This week we decided to try what has been told to us as ‘‘The Best Burger in Madison County’’. Pig Skins BBQ feels and is run like a family-owned business. It is located in the small town of Danielsville and I can honestly say, they were some of the nicest and warmest people I have ever met. Wonderful service, the wait was not too long and the food was great.

I ordered the double cheeseburger with fries combo which came with a large drink totaling around $11.

Oh my, goodness was this food filling. The burger was cooked well and oh boy was it sloppy also just the way I like it. The only downside is that I caught a minor case of the food coma right after, but I would say that’s a good thing.

Pig Skins BBQ has more to offer than just burgers, with a temping breakfast menu which they serve starting at 5:30 am and lunch starts at 11 am, but get here early because they close at 2 pm.

Seating is at a minimum and no bathrooms, but other than that I would definitely see myself coming back; I would highly recommend Pig Skins BBQ to anyone in the mood for some old fashion comfort food.
